(SportsNetwork.com) - The Pittsburgh Penguins hope to get their defense back on track and avoid a third straight loss when they visit the rival Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday. Pittsburgh is allowing 2.46 goals per game in 2014-15, tying the club with Boston for eighth in the NHL. However, the Penguins had trouble keeping the puck out of their own net over the weekend, surrendering a total of 11 goals over a pair of setbacks against Metropolitan Division rivals. The Pens dropped a 6-3 road decision to the New York Islanders on Friday and were then dealt a 5-2 home loss by the New York Rangers on Sunday. Pittsburgh is currently sandwiched between the two New York clubs at the top of the Metro standings, with the Rangers trailing the Penguins by two points for second place and the Isles holding a five-point lead atop the division. Marc-Andre Fleury took both losses this weekend for the Pens. The franchise goaltender allowed five goals on 34 shots against the Islanders and was pulled early in the second period on Sunday after giving up four goals to the Rangers on 17 shots. Fleury could get a rest from Thomas Greiss over the next two days, as Pittsburgh is scheduled to complete its pre-All-Star break docket tomorrow at home against Chicago. Fleury is 24-16-2 with a 2.88 goals against average in his career against Philly and 5-2-2 with a 2.60 GAA versus the Blackhawks. Greiss, has a lifetime 2-0 record with a 1.00 GAA in two outings against the Flyers. Greiss stopped 13-of-14 shots after Fleury was pulled from Sundays loss to the Rangers, who received two goals from both Rick Nash and Derek Stepan. David Perron had a goal and an assist in the loss and Sidney Crosby also scored for the Penguins, who have lost four of their last six games and are just 4-6-2 over the last 12 games. When you play like that you dont give yourself a good chance of winning, said Crosby. We have to come out with better efforts against teams like this, because they were real motivated to play this game and we werent. The Pens have lost six of their last seven road games to fall to 10-5-4 as the guest. They have four wins over their past six trips to Philly, but the Flyers have won five straight in the series overall. This is the second of four meetings this season between the Flyers and Pens. Philly won 5-3 in Pittsburgh on Oct. 22 behind a three-point night from Sean Couturier, who had a goal and two assists in the road victory. After tonight, Philly and Pittsburgh wont meet again until getting together April 1 in the Steel City. The Flyers enter tonights encounter with their cross-state rivals 11 points out of a playoff spot in the East and coming off a 7-4 road loss in Mondays clash with the New York Islanders. Philadelphia never led on Monday and trailed the Islanders 3-0 at one point. Although the Flyers eventually got their offense going, the loss marked just the third time this season Philly lost when scoring four or more goals (14-2-1). The Islanders had put up four goals just past the midway mark of the second period, resulting in the Flyers pulling netminder Rob Zepp after he stopped just 16-of-20 shots. Ray Emery saved 18-of-20 attempts in relief of Zepp. Weve got to do a better job in front of our goalies, Flyers captain Claude Giroux said. Our best defense is our offense, so we have to go play offensively and keep the puck down there. The Flyers, who have lost three of four, received goals from Giroux, Michael Del Zotto, Mark Streit and Chris VandeVelde. Brayden Schenn and Jakub Voracek added two assists apiece. Voracek has an NHL- best 55 points on 17 goals and 38 assists, Philly blueliners Carlo Colaiacovo and Nick Schultz both left the game with an upper-body injuries and did not return. Schultz will miss tonight, while Colaiacovo is questionable. The Flyers are already without defensemen Braydon Coburn (broken foot) and Nicklas Grossmann (upper body) and recalled D-men Oliver Lauridsen and Brandon Manning from their AHL affiliate, the Lehigh Valley Phantoms. Both Lauridsen and Manning are available for tonights game if needed. The Flyers are 11-7-3 at home compared to a miserable 7-15-4 mark on the road. Philadelphia begins a five-game stay at Wells Fargo Center tonight and the second test of the homestand is scheduled for next Tuesday. Julian Green Jersey . -- Ben Bishop had a milestone game against one of the NHLs greatest goalies. Sven Ulreich Bayern Munich Jersey . With the Canadiens leading by one to start the third period, Price turned away 16 shots by the Panthers in the final frame to give Montreal a 2-1 victory over Florida on Monday night. The Panthers (16-21-6) outshot Montreal 16-10 in the final frame, but were repeatedly frustrated by Price, who made 26 saves on the night. http://www.fcbayernsoccerproshop.com/c-8...ersey.aspx . Ryu (8-3) allowed a run and three hits in six innings and struck out six in his 13th start. In his first 13 starts last season -- his first in the major leagues -- the left-hander was 8-5 with a 2.85 ERA. This was the ninth time this year that Ryu has allowed fewer than three earned runs, and he is 7-0 in those games. Jerome Boateng Jersey . Now comes an off-season of questions about manager Matt Williams decisions and a handful of key roster choices, including what to do about Ryan Zimmerman, whether to sign Jordan Zimmermann and Ian Desmond to long-term deals, and how to upgrade an offence that fell flat in October. Mats Hummels Jersey . Monta Ellis had 30 points and nine assists, Nowitzki was another of seven Dallas players in double figures with 11 points and the Mavericks beat the Los Angeles Lakers 123-104 Tuesday night.RUHPOLDING, Germany -- Gabriela Soukalova of the Czech Republic won the womens individual race to extend her lead in the World Cup biathlon standings on Friday. Soukalova missed only one target and completed the 15-kilometre course in 40 minutes, 32.6 seconds for both victories in this seasons individual discipline. Darya Domracheva of Belarus was second, 34.3 seconds behind with two missed targets, while Veronika Vitkova completed a good afternoon for the Czechs by shooting cleanlyy for third place, 38.dddddddddddd6 seconds behind. Germanys Franziska Hildebrand and Norways Tora Berger were fourth and fifth, respectively. Both missed one target. Rosanna Crawford of Canmore, Alta., was the top Canadian in 26th place. NEW YORK -- Five former NFL players, including six-time Pro Bowl defensive end Neil Smith, are suing the union for not providing accurate information about the risk of head injuries. The lawsuit on behalf of Smith, Ladell Betts, Anthony Davis, Christian Ballard and Gregory Westbrooks was filed Thursday in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Missouri, with the plaintiffs claiming the NFL Players Association "withheld information from the players about the risks of head injuries." The former players are seeking medical monitoring and financial compensation for long-term chronic injuries, financial losses, expenses and intangible losses. It refers to the "pathological and debilitating effects of traumatic brain injuries (TBI) caused by concussive and sub-concussive impacts." The players named former union presidents Trace Armstrong, Troy Vincent and Kevin Mawae in the suit. "This lawsuit has no merit and we will defend our union and our past presidents," the NFLPA said in a statement. "It erroneously alleges that the NFLPA knowingly and fraudulently concealed from players the risks of head injuries players faced by playing in NFL games and practices over the last several decades. "The NFLPA has made the health and safety of its members a priority and the advancements in professional football on concussion education, prevention and treatment are a result of our efforts." The lawsuit notes that the players paid dues to the union, which assured them their best interests would be protected. But, the plaintiffs say, that did not happen. "We believe that the most important resource in the NFL is the players, and the most essential part of a players body is the brain," said attorney Kevin Regan, who is representing the players in the lawsuit. "Considering the millions of dollars received as dues from NFLPA members, the NFLPA did not do enough to protect its members from traumatic brain injury." The union also is accused of "engaging in a campaign of disinformation designed to dispute accepted and valid research regarding the connection between repetitive head injuries or concussions and degenerative brain disease; and to create a falsified body of research that the NFLPA could cite as proof that truthful and accepted neuroscience on the subject was inconclusive and subject to doubt." Smith spent 13 seasons in the NFL, nine with Kansas City, and was one of the games top defensive players. He retired in 2000. Betts was a running back for nine seasons, the first eight with Washington. He retired in 2010. Davis played eight seasons with four teams and won a Super Bowl with Baltimore after the 2000 season, his last year in the league. Ballard, a defensive end in 2011 and 2012, left the Vikings last September. Coincidentally, he is being represented by the union in a grievance concerning about $240,000 in 2013 salary that he collected but the team is trying to recoup. Westbrooks, now 61, played parts of seven seasons from 1975-81 as a linebacker and special teamer with four clubs. Pierre Pilote Jersey .The team had a meeting prior to facing Russia at the world junior hockey championship and got the effort theyve been looking for by defeating the Russians 4-1 to advance to the quarter-finals. So true. It is one thing to create a winning football team, and another to keep it winning. Each and every week it changes. Needing to bulk up on both sides of the line, the Falcons agreed to terms with guard Jon Asamoah, defensive end Tyson Jackson and defensive tackle Paul Soliai. Asamoah and Jackson played last season with Kansas City, where Asamoah lost his starting job.PHOENIX -- The Arizona Diamondbacks avoided arbitration with Mark Trumbo by agreeing Thursday to a $4.8 million. one-year contract with the outfielder. Arizona acquired Trumbo from the Los Angeles Angels in December in a three-team trade that also included the Chicago White Sox. Trumbo hit 34 home runs last season and 32 in 2012. He has 95 home runs since reaching the major leagues in 2011. A first baseman much of his time with the Angels, Trumbo is expected to play left field for Arizona.dddddddddddd Other than Paul Goldschmidt with 36 homers, the Diamondbacks had no one hit more than 14 last season. Trumbo was Arizonas last player in arbitration. He had asked for a raise from $540,000 to $5.85 million when the sides swapped proposed salaries last month, and the Diamondbacks had offered $3.4 million. CHICAGO - Mark Buehrle felt a little more nervous and a little more emotional than he thought he would. The pitcher received a standing ovation from the crowd as he took the mound against his former Chicago White Sox teammates. Buehrle tipped his cap and then allowed three runs in 5 1-3 innings in his first start as a visitor in Chicago and third game against the White Sox overall. The Toronto starter didnt earn a decision, but the Blue Jays beat the White Sox 6-3 on Saturday night. Melky Cabreras two-run double in the seventh inning was the difference in Torontos win. "The reception I got, I was kind of thinking it might be good, but what they did, coming off the field every time I ran out, to hear people cheering, it was exceptional," Buehrle said. Buehrle texted former teammate, and White Sox captain, Paul Konerko to make sure it was OK that he tipped his cap to the crowd. "Its one of those things that I didnt want to (tick) anybody off on the other team, but at the same time the reaction I was getting from the crowd, I felt it was right," Buehrle said. The Blue Jays, who snapped a four-game losing streak, scored three runs in the seventh to retake the lead after the White Sox tied it with three runs in the sixth. Avisail Garcia went 2 for 4 with a double for the White Sox in his first game since April 9 after recovering from shoulder surgery. Brett Cecil (1-3) got two outs — both by strikeout — to earn the win. Casey Janssen worked one inning for his 19th save in 22 opportunities. The Blue Jays allowed Buehrle to take the field alone before the bottom of the first inning, and fans gave him a standing ovation. While with the White Sox from 2000-11, Buehrle threw a perfect game on July 23, 2009, against Tampa Bay, and a no-hitter on April 18, 2007, against Texas. "Im kind of glad its over," said Konerko, a teammate of Buehrles on the 2005 World Series championship White Sox team. "Him in another uniform doesnt look right to me. Quite honestly, I really dont have it in me to want to see him do badly, so I dont like the combination." The Blue Jays took a 2-0 lead on Dioner Navarros sacrifice fly and Nolan Reimolds RBI single in the second. Toronto extended the lead to 3-0 in the fifth on Jose Reyes RBI single. The White Sox tied it with three runs in the sixth. With runners on first and second, Dustin McGowan replaced Buehrle. "It was starting to snowball," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said about removing Buehrle. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch before Dayan Viciedos sacrifice fly made it 3-2. Konerko tied it with a single, but the White Sox bullpen gave the lead back in the next inning. The Blue Jays scored three runs with two singles, two doubles and a Chicago error. Matt Lindstrom (2-2) allowed four straight hits before recording an out. Cabrera hit a two-run double and advanced on an error. Jose Bautista followed with an RBI single for a 6-3 lead. Buehrle has one victory in his last 13 starts. "I take pride going deep into games, and I didnt really go deep into the game today, so thats the frustrating part," he said. TRAINERS ROOM Blue Jays: 1B Dan Johnson began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Buffalo on Saturday. He is on the DL with a strained left hamstring. Toronto also called up RHP Kyle Drabek from Triple-A to replace RHP Chad Jenkins, who was optioned to Buffalo on Friday. Drabek began the season in the Triple-A rotation, where he went 4-6 with a 4.46 ERA. After the first-round draft pick moved to the bullpen in mid-June, his numbers improved. In 16 relief appearances, he was 3-1 with a 2.77 ERA. White Sox: Garcia was reinstated from the 60-day DL, and OF Moises Sierra (oblique) went on the 15-day DL on Saturday. The White Sox also recalled LHP Eric Surkamp from Triple-A Charlotte, placed RHP Javy Guerra on the bereavement list, and designated LHP Charlie Leesman for assignment before Saturdays game. UP NEXT In the finale of the three-game series Sunday, Toronto starts RHP Drew Hutchinson (8-10, 4.60 ERA) against RHP Scott Carroll (4-7, 4.81). Greg Luzinski Phillies Jersey . Both of Padakins goals came in the second period while Zane Jones added a single in the first period for Calgary (13-6-4). Hitmen goaltender Chris Driedger finished with 30 saves for the shutout. Chase Utley Phillies Jersey . They probably ruined Tim Duncans hopes of a career change, though. Duncan wants to be a point guard, coach Gregg Popovich revealed Saturday, a wish that wont be granted. http://www.philliesbaseballproshop.com/h...es-jersey/ .J. -- Pete Carroll said it was the suspension of linebacker Bruce Irvin last spring that finally got the attention of the rest of the Seattle Seahawks that they needed to be taking their commitment to the team more seriously. Aaron Nola Phillies Jersey . So he and his Toronto FC teammates say they will have no problem getting up for their Amway Canadian Championship final against rival Montreal Impact, even if the result doesnt count toward Major League Soccer standings. John Kruk Phillies Jersey . The unrestricted free agent agreed to terms with the club on Thursday on a one-year, two-way deal worth $700,000.MINNEAPOLIS - Just when Joe Mauer restored his smooth swing, it brought more trouble by triggering his latest injury. This frustrating season for Minnesotas catcher-turned-first baseman worsened Wednesday, when Mauer woke up with more discomfort than he had the night before from a strained muscle on his right side and was placed on the 15-day disabled list. "Its been a very trying year for me personally," Mauer said. "I get things going and something happens, but thats baseball. ... This is another thing that Ive got to work through, and hopefully it doesnt take too long and I get back out there soon." Mauer was hurt swinging on his two-run double in the fourth inning Tuesday that stretched his hitting streak to 12 straight games. He batted .320, his career average, with 13 RBIs over the last 19 games. But prior to his recent surge, the six-time All-Star and three-time American League batting title holder has been in his worst slump ever, his average dipping as low as .254 a couple of times last month. "Hes put in a lot of hard work here getting his swing where he wants it, and its been falling in for him, hes been driving in runs, and now we have this," manager Ron Gardenhire said. "You know what? It is part of the game when you play every day. Youre going to have some of these things, and now we jjust have to let him heal.dddddddddddd" Mauer missed the last 39 games last year with concussion-like symptoms, prompting his position switch. He sat out almost a week earlier this season with a bad back. Knee and lower-body injuries hounded him at times in his career. His substandard production at the corner infield spot already put his All-Star selection in doubt, but this strained-oblique setback sealed the deal: Mauer wont play in the midsummer classic in his hometown. "Hes been an All-Star for quite a bit, and Im sure its something that he wouldve loved to have been a part of, but you know what? You get hurt, you get hurt," Gardenhire said. Though Mauer stayed in the game to run the bases, he said he knew right away the injury was serious. "Ive never been shot before, but it felt like I got shot," Mauer said. The Twins called up Chris Colabello from Triple-A Rochester to take his place on the roster. Colabello was hitting .275 with six home runs and 27 RBI in 36 games with the Red Wings. In 40 games with the Twins earlier this year, Colabello batted .232, but with 10 doubles, four home runs and 30 RBIs. So while Colabello hasnt played in a game for the Twins since May 23, he still has driven in more runs than Mauer, who has 28 RBIs in 76 games with 20 extra-base hits. Hes batting .271. ABUJA, Nigeria -- Ousted Nigeria Football Federation officials are returning to work, a federation spokesman said, after FIFA threatened to suspend the country from international soccer for the second time in two months if they werent re-instated by Monday. NFF spokesman Ademola Olajire said general secretary Musa Amadu and others were "back in the office" at the federation headquarters on Monday after they were removed at a government-endorsed meeting last month. FIFAs ultimatum put Nigeria, the African champion, at risk of being banned and having to forfeit an African Cup of Nations qualifier against South Africa on Wednesday, and possibly its place at next years continental championship. "What I see and know is that the general secretary and the management are back in the office," Olajire told The Associated Press by telephone. He also said the NFF would send a letter to FIFA to inform it that officials were returning. FIFA said it could not comment while it was "verifying the respective information concerning the Nigeria Football Federation." FIFA did not recognize the Aug. 26 elections that were overseen by the Nigerian sports ministry and replaced NFF president Aminu Maigari with Chris Giwa. FIFA rules do not allow governments to interfere in football. Olajire said Maigari wasnt yet back at work but "can return at any time." "The persons claiming to be elected at the congress on 26 August are not around," Olajire said. The Aug. 26 elections removed Maigari for the second time in two months. He was arrested on his return from the World Cup in Brazil in July and the NFF was being run then by a sports ministry-appointed official, leading FIFA to suspend Nigeria for nine days. Maigari was re-instated briefly but was again detained by security forces while Giwa and others were elected to replace the NFF leadership, FIFA said. FIFA wants Maigari to be allowed to oversee new elections. Nigerias squad arrived in Cape Town on Monday to prepare for the South Africa game following a 3-2 loss to Republic of Congo over the weekend to open its African Cup qualifying campaign. The federation indicated that the game would go ahead, although it said coach Stephen Keshi would only join the squad on Tuesday as he was dealing with "pressing personal issues." But whether he fights again is still up in the air.Longtime coach Firas Zahabi believes the former UFC welterweight champion is not short of motivation as he continues his comeback from knee surgery during his hiatus from the sport.Zahabi, in Halifax to corner five fighters including No. 2 welterweight Rory MacDonald on Saturdays televised UFC card, says GSP is scheduled to take his training up a notch. Hes been cleared now to do some martial arts training, Zahabi said this week. Were going to take it one step at a time. Were going to get back in the gym, try to have some fun. You know he hasnt kicked and punched in a long time so were going to have some fun with it first.St-Pierre (25-2) vacated his title last December saying he needed time away from the sport. But he kept training. He underwent surgery in April after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament during a workout. GSP had reconstructive surgery on his other knee in December 2011.The 33-year-old St-Pierre has denied recent reports that he is returning to action. No decision, St-Pierre said in a text Friday to The Canadian Press. Zahabi says he cant speak for the former champion. But I believe theres still a lot of fire in him, said Zahabi. I just think he needs to balance his life a lot more. When you run, you trip.He did too many fights too soon, too much. I think hes just got to space them out. He can handle that. He just needs to have some personal life as well. After a controversial razor-thin split decision over Johny (Bigg Rigg) Hendricks at UFC 167 last November, the battered champion seemed a man on the edge.I cant sleep at night now. Im going crazy, he said in the post-fight news conference. I have issues..ddddddddddddI need to relax. I need to get out for a while. I dont know what Im going to do.He announced his hiatus weeks later, without going into detail on the issues bothering him.Hendricks went on to claim the vacant 170-pound title, beating (Ruthless) Robbie Lawler. The two are scheduled to fight again Dec. 6 at UFC 181.Like Zahabi, UFC Canada boss Tom Wright also has his own opinion on St-Pierre.I dont have any facts whatsoever. My hunch is that Georges will come back, said Wright, who also heads up UFC operations in Australia and New Zealand. But Georges will want to come back on his own terms.Id like to see nothing better.Since stepping aside, St-Pierre has talked of the need for more stringent drug testing in his sport.Wright points to the two different camps on GSPs fighting future. One wants St-Pierre to retire at the top of his game. The other says he has unfinished business and perhaps wants to go out on different terms.Who knows, said Wright.UFC president Dana White has said that St-Pierre could return to a title fight.St-Pierre has already cemented his legacy in the sport. The win over Hendricks was a record 19th in the UFC for St-Pierre, one more than former welterweight champion Matt Hughes. It also moved GSP past former middleweight champion Anderson Silva for most wins in UFC title bouts at 12.St-Pierre holds the record for career fight time in the UFC at five hours 28 minutes 12 seconds. He also owns the UFC mark for most championship rounds fought (52). UFC 167 was St-Pierres 14th championship fight, one behind Randy Couture.St-Pierre exited leading the UFC records in total strikes landed, significant strikes landed, takedowns landed and takedown accuracy rate, according to FightMetric.---Follow @NeilMDavidson on Twitter Cheap NFL Jerseys Wholesale Jerseys Wholesale NFL Jerseys Jerseys From China Wholesale NFL Jerseys Cheap NFL Jerseys Cheap Jerseys ' ' '

With Fridays win the Winnipeg Jets improve to 2-0 on the season, winning both games after giving up the first goal of the game. The home opener for the Jets featured a physical start with the Jets outhitting the Kings by a 10-4 count before the first commercial break. But the shots on goal tally very much favoured the Kings, outshooting the Jets 18-7 in the first period, a period that ended in a 1-1 tie thanks to a number of big saves by Ondrej Pavelec. Matt Greenes point shot went off Dustin Byfuglien and in, but less than two minutes later Evander Kanes shot was blocked by Greene, with the puck coming right back to Kane and a quick wrist shot beat Jonathan Quick to tie the game 1-1. Kane had three shots on goal and four hits in the opening period. In the second period the Kings kept putting pucks to the net and at one time were outshooting the Jets 25-9 before the Jets got going and went on an 11-1 run in shots, taking the lead on Olli Jokenins 300th NHL goal. Prior to that goal the Jets had one called back, on this ruling from the NHL – Video review determined that Blake Wheelers shot entered the net after it had come off its moorings. According to rule 78.5: “apparent goals shall be disallowed by the referee when the net becomes displaced accidently.” After watching replays Jets fans on the TSN 1290 post game show called in feeling Quick had deliberately dislodged the net. The Jets chased Quick in the third on back to back goals by Devin Setoguchi. The first one was a deflection of a Kane shot (the goal was initially credited to Kane), the second was on a wrap-around on a play started by Kanes speed. The 4-1 lead had the sold out crowd at MTS Centre in a party mood but the Kings almost spoiled the party as back to back power play goals 4:44 apart made it a one goal game with over four minutes left. The comeback ended with an empty net goal by Bryan Little making it a 5-3 final. It was the Jets first victory in three home openers. For Setoguchi it was his 19th career multi-point game (he has two hat-tricks, a regular season one against Colorado and a one in the playoffs against Detroit), and his 10th career three-point game. For Kane it was his seventh career three point game, while his first period fight with Colin Fraser was his eighth career scrap. He ended the game with a team high seven shots on goal. “With a heavy team like them you have to let them know early you wont be run out of your own building,” commented Kane post-game. Jokinen also had an assist, giving him 399 career assists and 699 career points. Jokinen was a Los Angeles draft pick in 1997, third overall behind Joe Thornton and Patrick Marleau. Byfuglien lead in ice time with 23:52 and his game drew praise from head coach Claude Noel. “He was physical, got his shots through, made good first passes.” As for the game, Noel had this to say: “We have a way of making games exciting. We got ourselves in penalty trouble, lost face-offs (Jets won only 37% in this game), got kicked out on face-offs, were not in shooting lanes. But we have to stay out of the box.” Jets gave up two power play goals for the second straight game, while scoring one power play goal for the second straight game. The first period shots on goal had the coach concerned. “We had a slow start, got better in the second and third. We passed up too many shots in the first, turned pucks over. That changed in the second. Frolik forced a turnover on Jokinens goal and it got us going. We are learning the necessary things to get us into the playoffs, and managing the puck is one of them. We did a lot of good things in the game, got a lot of good things from a lot of people.” Next up for the Jets is a home game Sunday against the Anaheim Ducks (TSN Jets, TSN 1290). The game will mark Teemu Selannes final NHL game in the city he started his career, with a 76-goal rookie season in 92-93. Jacoby Ellsbury Jersey . (SportsNetwork.com) - The Houston Rockets should have an easy time with the Minnesota Timberwolves Friday night on the road at Target Center. The Rockets have won five of their last six games and are 14-4 this season. They are coming off an impressive 105-96 win over the then NBA-best Memphis Grizzlies on Wednesday and James Harden scored 21 points. Harden is third in the NBA in scoring with 25.0 ppg. Houston led for the final 38 minutes of the game and by as many as 27 points in the second half. Trevor Ariza and Jason Terry scored 16 points apiece, while Donatas Motiejunas added 15 points for Houston, which shot 44.1 percent for the game and recorded 30 points on 21 Memphis turnovers. Memphis shot 51.3 percent, but the miscues added up. We played really well, said Rockets coach Kevin McHale. Guys moved the ball and attacked them before they got set, which is one of the keys to beating those guys. Thats a really good team and a hell of a win for us. McHales bunch is 7-1 on the road and first in opponents scoring at 93.0 percent. Opposing teams are shooting just 42.7 percent against the Rockets, who havent had center Dwight Howard (knee) in the lineup since Nov. 17 and hes posting an average of 18.8 points and 11.3 rebounds. Howard is out indefinitely and has missed seven straight games. Rockets guard Isaiah Canaan (ankle) is listed as questionable Friday. The Timberwolves are a disappointing 4-13 this season and became victims of the previously winless Philadelphia 76ers Wednesday night. In an 85-77 setback to a squad of baby-faced players, former Sixer Thaddeus Young scored 16 points and Gorgui Dieng added 15 and 16 rebounds. Mo Williams scored 14 points, handed out seven assists and grabbed six rebounds for Minnesota, which shot only 35.7 percent and hit on 3-of-17 3- pointers. The T-wolves turned the ball over 19 times and misfired on six of their final seven possessions. Were not a very good team right now and weve all got to get better, said Timberwolves coach Flip Saunders. Weve got to work with our guys more to get them to do what we need to do. Saunders team has lost three straight and 11 of the last 13 games, and is winless in the previous four at home. The Wolves have a 2-6 home record. Minnesota, which is 1-12 when allowing 100 or more points and 1-13 when being outshot, is still toiling without guards Ricky Rubio (ankle) and Kevin Martin (wrist) and center Nikola Pekovic (wrist/foot). All three have missed a combined 27 games. The Timberwolves sustained a 113-101 loss to Houston on Nov. 12 in Mexico City, as Harden led the way with a game-best 23 points. Howard had 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Corey Brewer countered with 18 points for Minnesota. Houston went 3-1 against Minnesota last season and has won 21 of the previous 27 games in this series. Houston has won 10 of its last 13 trips to Minnesota, and the two teams will meet again Feb. 23 and March 27 in Houston. Marcus Maye Jets Jersey . Kieran Gibbs, Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud scored in the second half in front of a noisy crowd in Istanbul, plus hostile media and Gunners fans at home after an off-season of failed transfer deals for the cash-rich club. Under-fire manager Arsene Wenger now looks all but certain to lead his team into the Champions League group stage for the 16th straight season after the return match next Tuesday. The winners of the playoff matches earn a spot in the lucrative 32-team group stage. "We could have been a little bit shaky after what happened on Saturday," said Wenger, whose team lost 3-1 at home to Aston Villa in the Premier League opener. "So for us it was very important to start on the front foot. That was vital tonight for us and we did it well." Away teams dominated Wednesdays five playoff matches, as Swiss champion Basel won 4-2 in Bulgaria against Ludogorets Razgrad and Austria Vienna won 2-0 at Dinamo Zagreb. Schalke drew 1-1 at home to PAOK Thessaloniki and it was also 1-1 between Steaua Bucharest and Legia Warsaw. All the return legs are played next week. Arsenals neat passing impressed from the start, although Giroud and Ramsey spurned the teams only half-chances before the break. The visitors lost defender Laurent Koscielny to a nasty-looking kick in the face from Fenerbahce forward Pierre Webo, who was booked. Koscielny was left bleeding from an open wound and was taken to a hospital for a checkup after the match. "Its very deep, its very, very deep," Wenger said of Koscielnys wound. Yet Wengers players surged on and defender Gibbs struck in the 51st when connecting with Theo Walcotts slick pass across the goalmouth. Ramseys 22-yard shot in the 64th slipped under Fenerbahce goalkeeper Volkan Demirels diving grasp, and Walcott earned a penalty by drawing a foul from defender Michal Kadlec. Giroud fired the 77th-minute spot kick decisively to Demirels right, and Arsenal goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny preserved the clean sheet with excellent late saves. ------ LONDON (AP) -- Branislav Ivanovics second-half header gave Chelsea a 2-1 victory over Aston Villa onn Wednesday, moments after he avoided a red card in a fiery second match of the Premier League season.dddddddddddd The right back was only booked for elbowing Christian Benteke in the head, and then sent Frank Lampards free kick into the net in the 73rd minute. "This is English football, for some reason the world loves it more than any other league -- one thing is (because of) a real aggression I would call it," Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said. "Another thing is duels that are handled in a certain way and I think the referee did very well. Chelsea fortuitously went in front after seven minutes when the ball inadvertently bounced off Antonio Luna into his own net. Although Chelsea faded, allowing Benteke to level in first-half stoppage time, Villa couldnt find the net again and replicate its surprise victory at Arsenal on Saturday. Instead, Ivanovic ensured Mourinhos second spell at Stamford Bridge has started with back-to-back league wins. "A draw wouldnt have been an unfair result -- they fought a lot," Mourinho said. "They created great difficulties." It was the only Premier League game played Wednesday after the match was moved forward by almost two weeks because of Europa League winner Chelseas UEFA Supercup match against Champions League winner Bayern Munich. ------ MADRID (AP) -- Brazilian recruit Neymar scored his first goal for Barcelona to secure a 1-1 draw at Atletico Madrid on Wednesday after Lionel Messi left the field injured in the first leg of the Spanish Super Cup. Atleticos David Villa enjoyed the perfect start against his former club by scoring the opening goal in the 12th minute. Villa left Barcelona following the arrival of Neymar in the off-season. Messi was replaced at halftime with a left thigh problem and Neymar went on in the 59th. Just seven minutes later, he headed in the equalizer from a pass by Dani Alves. The 21-year-old Neymar joined the Spanish champions from Brazilian club Santos for 57 million euros in June, the eighth most expensive signing in football history. And after two appearances, both as a substitute as he recovers from anemia, he has his first goal. The return leg will be played at Barcelonas Camp Nou next Wednesday after this weekends league fixtures. Beijing, China (SportsNetwork.com) - Reigning champion and three-time overall titlist Novak Djokovic and Spanish star David Ferrer were among Thursdays second-round winners at the $2.315 million China Open. The top-seeded world No. 1 Djokovic held off hard-hitting Spanish left-hander Fernando Verdasco 7-5, 2-6, 6-2, while the third-seeded French Open runner-up Ferrer overcame Aussie Marinko Matosevic 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 on the hardcourts at the National Tennis Center. Djokovic beat Ferrer in the final here in 2010. Up next for Djokovic will be American Sam Querrey, while Ferrers quarterfinal opponent on Friday will be fifth-seeded Frenchman Richard Gasquet. The U.S. Open semifinalist Gasquet grounded Aussie Bernard Tomic 7-6 (7-2), 6-4, while Querrey ousted sixth-seeded U.S. Open semifinalist Stanislas Wawrinka 6-3, 7-6 (7-2) on Day 4 in Beijing. Fridays other quarters will pit second-seeded and 2005 Beijing titlist Rafael Nadal against Italian Fabio Fognini and fourth-seeded and 2011 China Open champ Tomas Berdych versus eighth-seeded American John Isner. Berdych was a runner-up in Bangkok last week. The U.S. and French Open champion Nadal would supplant Djokovic atop the mens rankings should he reach the final this weekend. The super Spaniard already owns a whopping 11 titles on tour this year and is currently riding a 19-match winning streak. The 2013 Beijing titlist will earn $557,100. Thunder Hats . By overcoming one of this seasons top-five teams for the first time despite being largely outplayed, Tottenham moved just three points behind fourth-place Liverpool. Spurs scored from their only shot on target, with Adebayor controlling a free kick, taken swiftly and smartly by Kyle Walker, and going past Seamus Coleman and dispatching the ball into the net in the 65th minute. "The ball was great, the control was not bad and I had one choice — to finish with my left foot," Adebayor said. Having collected just one point from its previous two matches, Tottenhams season now appears to be back on track again as it moved nine points behind leader Chelsea. For Everton, so impressive in its first season under Roberto Martinez, this was only the Merseyside teams third league loss in four months. And the hard-working, well-drilled Toffees should have come away from White Hart Lane with at least a point. "We have to hope football wont be that harsh on us again," Martinez said, with 13 games remaining. Leon Osman had a trio of chances in the opening 10 minutes alone, with the best of them — a volley — turned wide by Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris. Overrunning the hosts in midfield, Everton was preventing Tottenham making an impact, and leaving them exposed on counterattacks. Tim Howward was barely troubled in the Everton goal, with a free kick from Christian Eriksen that dipped over him onto the roof of the net providing a rare moment of danger.dddddddddddd But when Everton was presented with scoring opportunities, too often they were wasted. Winger Kevin Mirallas rampaged through the Tottenham defence and reached the edge of the area but then struck over rather than picking out one of his better-positioned teammates. As halftime approached, Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood was becoming increasingly anxious, going from bellowing instructions to cursing misses. There was little change at the start of the second half, with Sherwood kicking bottles and accidentally sending spray across the technical area. "Im not pleased about how we are starting games," Sherwood said. "Its something we have to address and find out why." What was missing from either team, since those early Osman chances, was a player to find a breakthrough amid their midfield sparring. "I want them to play with risk," Sherwood said. "It was a bit stodgy in there." Then, out of nowhere, came Adebayors sixth goal in nine league games since being brought in from the cold by Sherwood after being sidelined by Andre Villas-Boas. "Its all about how hes being managed," Sherwood said somewhat mischievously. And it was enough to clinch the three points for Tottenham, which had previously failed to beat top-four rivals Chelsea, Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool this season. The Florida Panthers will have an array of options when it comes to the first-overall selection in tonights NHL Draft. According to TSN Hockey Insider Darren Dreger, the Panthers are considering a number of trade options for the pick, including those from teams picking outside of the top 10 selections. Many of those offers are believed to be centred around current NHL players. Dreger adds that the Panthers do not plan on making their decision on whether to trade the top pick on the draft floor, and therefore will likely make a decision prior to the kick-off of the first round. The Buffalo Sabres and Edmonton Oilers are also both content staying at second and third overall, respectively, according to Dreger. You can watch the draft live on TSN and TSN GO at 7pm et/4pm pt. Five years is a long time in life. In football, five years is a lifetime. Nevertheless, one thing I still remember from the conversation was the subject of players from the United States of America plying their trade in Major League Soccer. American defender Michael Parkhurst was a player I admired a lot, but had recently left the league to play in Denmark. I meant no disrespect to the Danish Super League when I asked the question, but I wanted to know how a league with lofty ambitions could justify losing one of its best players, who is American, to a lesser known European league. The commissioner, as he often does in interviews, gave a thoughtful, realistic view in that he knew, for many Americans, that the league could not stand in the way of their ambitions to make it to the top level in the game. At the time, the designated player rule was so new, it wasnt even walking yet. Born a year earlier when David Beckham joined Major League Soccer, the rule was seen by clubs as a way for the club to throw a large amount of money at one player from anywhere around the world to make their club better. The problem the league had at the time was that the spots, one per team, were so exclusive, clubs had to be very careful who they selected. Their pursuit was made even more difficult by the fact that few top players wanted to come. Clubs were shopping with deep pockets but were diverted from Beverly Hills to garage sales. In time, the league grew, more soccer specific stadiums were built with expansion on an almost yearly basis alongside new television deals and boosted revenues and, as such, the designated player rule evolved with the league, allowing teams to now purchase two or three players from around the world. These spots are the aces in the pack for a clubs general managers. Most of North Americas major sports are governed by a salary cap, designed to increase parity, which is supposedly good for the game. But what of the owners who want to spend more money on their team but cannot? These rich owners are used to getting what they want. In a one-on-one sit-down with TSN.ca last October, Toronto FC head coach Ryan Nelsen told me some of the hurdles the organization has to face when it comes to participating in a salary cap league. "Some of the rules are incredibly frustrating when you are a club that has the resources that we have, you get held back," he said. "Its communism really, trying to make everybody even, where we live in a democracy and (TFC) is kind of the Canada of the world, we are very progressive but we get held back by league rules, some of which I still cannot believe, obviously designed for parity but thats the MLS world we live in and it is done for a reason, with the best intentions of providing parity for the league and putting the league in a position where it can move on and continue to be very successful." Nelsen believes the 19-team league has never been more competitive. "Clubs are running it so much better than when I played, they understand what it takes for success, theres only really been a few clubs that havent really caught up with the infrastructure of running it, and now that is changing, even the likes of Chivas and ourselves, we are getting back into that now, and next season I cannot see very many teams, like it was last year with teams like Chivas, DC and us on 20 odd points, do that, I think we will see even more parity which is going to be phenomenal, " the coach stated. Such parity puts an even stronger emphasis on getting an edge over your rivals. There are so many layers of the sport that allow teams to be better than others, even if they spend the same amount of money. Making the right decisions regularly at a number of different levels, including scouting, developing and coaching, can put a team ahead of many before a ball is kicked in anger. The designated player, however, is the only area where owners can flex their financial muscles. For Toronto FC owners, Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, this provides an opportunity to separate yourself from somee of the other owners in the league.dddddddddddd Every offseason, teams across the league are looking for value. It is not just whether the player is good enough, it comes down to how much the player is going to cost and if the team can ensure they will get that value, or even exceed it, from the player that season. This is no different when it comes to designated players. For MLSE, who have run a moribund franchise for seven years, these three slots needed to go from Hail Mary, shots-in-the-darks to golden tickets, capable of attracting the finest players available in the game today. When you are a company who, earlier this season, paid NBA player Rudy Gay over $340,000 US a week and, more recently, signed Toronto Maple Leafs captain Dion Phanuef an average of $135,000 US per week, there is no issue in handing a similar contract to two international players to get them to come play for Toronto FC and ignite a team that could easily have been left to be watched by 5,000 diehards in three years if it carried on down the pathetic path it has lived on since it was born. The league does not let you overspend on the rest of your roster, so if you are willing to do whatever it takes financially to improve the squad this is your best bet. Jermain Defoe and Michael Bradley are obviously not two of the finest players in the game, but they are two of the finest players available. They are players who are not coming to Toronto and MLS for a pension. They are players who can make a difference, are willing to listen, are available, and, of course, extremely interested in the money, which isnt anywhere close to the amount of money any team in Europe is willing to pay them. Some fans would take this to mean they are not worth the money they are being paid by Toronto FC, but that is incorrect. The money they are getting is only relevant in terms of how it is attracting them to the club. Defoe and Bradley are unique players who can make a difference on and off the field. Defoe is arguably the best player in the game today that Toronto FC could realistically get, someone who is accomplished at the most difficult thing to do in the game: scoring goals. Seeing that he tops such a list, you could argue he is being underpaid. There is no other genuine goal-scorer from a top European league available with a proven track record better than Defoe, who could also put Nelsen down on his resume, as if he needed one, as a reference considering what he told me about the English striker back in October. Nelsens face lit up when we chatted about Defoe. "My goodness, one of the most natural goalscorers I have ever come across, always out training, always trying to score, a great guy, to get a guy like Jermain Defoe, gee whizz, never gets injured, doesnt drink, can play high, play low, scores all types of goals, perfect for the MLS, he would phenomenal," he said. Bradley is 26 and when news broke of his impending transfer to Toronto many people were stunned that he would be willing to come play in Major League Soccer at that age. However, this is no longer 2008. We should no longer be surprised. The designated player rule has given the league an opportunity to make talented players think twice about playing in Europe and thats how it should be. Bradleys expected wage in Toronto far exceeds what he was getting at Roma, and would get anywhere in Europe, just as Clint Dempseys deal with theSeattle Sounders does. Instead of these players sitting on the bench and getting occasional substitute appearances, because thats where they are supposed to play because it is the top level, they are now being rewarded for being close to the top of an exclusive list held in the hands of MLS general managers. As I suggested to the commissioner in 2008, having the very best Americans playing in the league is extremely important. The likes of Bradley, Dempsey and Landon Donovan will become household names by millions before and during the World Cup and now none of them are disappearing off to play in a different league afterwards. They are all coming to play in a North American city near you very soon. The word Major in MLS is starting to really matter. LISBON, Portugal -- Real Madrids record 10th European title will be written down as a seemingly convincing 4-1 victory over Atletico Madrid. In reality, "La Decima" was a lot harder to come by. Atletico was minutes away from its first Champions League title Saturday when Sergio Ramos began Reals comeback by heading in the equalizer in injury time. Real then broke down Atleticos resistance with three goals in the last period of extra time to create an unfairly lopsided score. "Its the most important goal Ive ever scored," Sergio Ramos said of his game-changing strike. "We made history against a great rival. " As Atletico faded, Gareth Bale scored the winning goal with a header in the 110th minute, before Marcelo slotted in the third in the 118th and Cristiano Ronaldo polished off the win with a penalty at the end. "Madrid was better," said Atletico coach Diego Simeone, who lost his temper toward the end after failing to complete a La Liga-Champions League title double. "They were able to get out on the break and that hurt our chances." Diego Godin had put Atletico ahead when his 36th-minute header looped into a Real goal left vacant by captain and veteran goalkeeper Casillas reckless rush out. Atletico -- which had to substitute striker Diego Costa early in the first half -- then simply wore out in extra time as the team failed to follow up on the Spanish league title it secured last weekend. Had Atletico held on for its first European title, Ronaldo and Bale would have shared some of the blame for a series of missed chances in the 90 minutes. Instead, the star forwards added to their storied clubs illustrious history in club footballs most prestigious competition. "Ive learned from past experiences to keep going, to forget about the chances you miss and keep persevering," Bale said. "The celebrations of the crowd meant everything to me." Real coach Carlo Ancelotti also ties the record with three European Cup victories as a coach, after winning in 2003 and 07 with AC Milan. The Italian becomes the fifth coach to win with two different clubs. "The hardest thing was to tie the game because it was so tough for us at that point," Ancelotti said. "They suffocated the space and were doing it so well. The goal gave us strength." Casillas also won his third Champions League title, being the only player remaining from the clubs previous 2000 and 02 victories. After Ramos goal made up for his own mistake, Casillas ran deep into Atleticos half to share a long celebratory hug with Marcelo. Bales decisive goal sparked wilder celebrations, while Ronaldo pulled off his shirt before provoking tempers with a muscle-flexing pose after scoring his penalty -- extending his record for a Champions League season to 17 goals. Atletico coach Diego Simeone -- known for his fiery temper -- came on the pitch for a second time in extra time in the final minutes and confronted Real defender Raphael Varane after he kicked the ball toward the Atletico bench. Simeone had to be restrained by his own staff and was sent to the stands. "Hes a young player with a bright future, hopefully he learns," Simeone said. For pulling off his shirt, Ronaldo earned one of 12 yellow cards shown by referee Bjorn Kuipers of the Netherlands in an often physical match. Ronaldo and Bale were both sent tumbling by tough tackles within three minutes, but it was Atleticos 36-goal forward Costa who had to quit early. Costa hobbled off after just nine minutes, making it clear that the gamble by coach Diego Simeone to put him in the starting lineup had backfired. Costa also exited last weekends 1-1 draw at Barcelona in the Spanish league decider and received a horse placenta treatment on his right hamstring in midweek. Four minutes after Bale wasted Reals best early chance, scooping a left-foot shot wide from 12 metres (yards), Godin made Real pay. Casillas charged from his line when Juanfran lifted a high ball toward the penalty spot, and was stranded when Godin rose to loop a header toward the empty goal. The ball crossed the goal line before the veteran keeper could swipe it away. In a second half of increasingly hectic Real attacks, Ronaldo tested Thibaut Courtois with a curling free kick but was off target with a pair of headers. Bale was guilty of a series of miscued shots with the outside of his left boot, and a handball in the Atletico penalty area that added to Real fans frustrations. Atletico was less than two minutes from the title when its tough defensive line was finally breached by Ramos sixth goal in seven games, including two in the semifinal against defending champion Bayern Munich. Trevor Lewis, Mike Richards, Alec Martinez and captain Dustin Brown scored for the Kings, who completed their five-game homestand with back-to-back wins after three straight one-goal defeats. Quick earned his 172nd career victory and surpassed Rogie Vachon, one of five players to have his uniform number retired by the club along with Marcel Dionne, Dave Taylor, Wayne Gretzky and Luc Robitaille. The shutout was the 30th of Quicks career, two shy of Vachons franchise mark. Vachon was in the arena for the record-breaker. The toughest save Quick had to make came at 3:04 of the second period during a Florida power play. He dove to his left at the last instant to glove a short backhander by Tomas Fleischmann, who went for the short side after defenceman Dmitry Kulikovs 60-foot slap shot took a hard carom off the end boards. The Kings recorded their 11th shutout, tying the franchise record set two seasons ago. The total includes three each by Martin Jones and Ben Scrivens, who blanked the Panthers on Oct. 13 at Sunrise, Fla. Los Angeles scored on three of its first 13 shots against three-time All-Star Roberto Luongo, who finished with 25 saves in his seventh start since returning to the Panthers in a trade with Vancouver. The Panthers, who have lost nine of their last 10 against Los Angeles, played their first game at Staples Center since Dec. 1, 2011. They have dropped five straight in the building since winning 5-2 on Nov. 27, 2002. Lewis opened the scoring at 11:03 of the fiirst period, beating Kulikov to a loose puck in the low slot and whipping it past Luongos stick after Willie Mitchells wrist shot from the right point struck teammate Kyle Clifford in front of the crease.dddddddddddd It was the third goal in seven games for Lewis, who had only two in his 55 previous games this season. Richards made it 2-0 at 17:16, just 13 seconds after the Panthers killed off a hooking penalty against Sean Bergenheim. The Kings centre got the puck in the right circle from Lewis, skated parallel to the goal line and put his 10th goal between Luongos pads. Brown added his 12th goal at 8:54 of the second, slipping the puck through the legs of Kulikov and into a wide-open net with Luongo out of position. Seconds earlier, Kulikov was tripped by Brown after carrying the puck away from the left boards. Martinezs power-play goal capped the scoring with 8:01 remaining while Quinton Howden was off for high-sticking Slava Voynov, who set up the goal. All 12 of Voynovs points on the power play have been assists. Quick, who has spent his entire seven-year career with Los Angeles, signed a $58 million, 10-year contract extension in June 2012 -- only 17 days after leading the Kings to their first Stanley Cup title and winning the Conn Smythe Trophy as playoff MVP. NOTES: Quick has won 47 games that were decided in overtime or a shootout. Vachon played in 66 games for the Kings that ended in ties. ...
